Subject:      Fw: Mannheim -- Dr. Van Zee

Hi all.  I had written a short note to our Mannheim principal, Dr. Van Zee, inviting him to the reunion this summer.  Today I received a nice letter from him, which I will print below.

"Dear Lisa:

Gee, Lisa, you made my day!  I still look at those days at MHS as my favorite assignment.  Your kind words are reassuring.  As you probably know, I left MHS in 1984 to go to Spain as the supt. of DODDS schools in Spain.  Then in 1987 I went to Italy as the Super for the 16 schools in Italy.  We really enjoyed Italy! I retired the last day of 1989 and moved back to our hometown.

We think of MHS a lot (I sometimes dream about those 11 years).  We had a great staff, wonderful people in the community as well as students who liked one another. Since retirement I was an aide to a state senator for two years, a city councilman for 8 years (I got beat last election) and have been an active volunteer in Kiwanis, the Dispute Resolution Center as mediator & Board Member, and am now president of the Olympic College Foundation. As you can see, I try to keep busy -- when not golfing or traveling.

Highlights most recently have been our 50th wedding anniversary and my 70th birthday this month.  We had a beer and bratwurst Birthday Bash with about 40 people here.

We are leaving this weekend for a cruise to Alaska.  That leaves only Hawaii as a state not visited.  We will go to the DODDS reunion in Denver in July and then on a trip to Copper Canyon in Mexico in November.  We've been back to England, back to Italy and Germany, to the Far East twice, Australia & NZ and Mexico twice.  In addition, we use our motor home at least once a year for a long trip.

We have lost track of most of the kids and faculty.  We see Tom Mickets and Bud Korth now and then.  Bob Phillips is in Texas as is Jane Horsely. Dave Douglas and many others are in Florida.  The last ones at MHS are Don Volz, Sandy Sapatka, Byron Ackerman, Janie Harrison, Mike Allen, Dee Laughlin, and Danny Andrew, but most have retired by now.  Liz Walker is a Supt. in Germany. Barbara Meister has a doctorate and lives in Athens, Georgia.

We will be unable to attend the MHS reunion, but would like to hear about it and the attendees.

You should know I still have my letter jacket, baseball cap, windbreaker, a stuffed Bison, a Bison wood carving, and a large picture of a bison on the wall in my den.

We enjoy life and each other & have 3 great grandkids rather close.

Life is good.  I trust it's the same for you.

Thanks for writing,

Warren Van Zee"

That's it, folks.  It was terrific hearing about him.  If you recall, Kirk Van Zee's father was Dr. Van Zee's brother, although I am sad to say that Kirk's father passed away about 5 years ago from cancer. Anyway, drop Dr. Van Zee an email if you get the chance.  I will list his address and email address below.  Meet me in St. Louis................

Love, Lisa
